Joan M. Byrne Devoted wife and mother created a welcoming home Joan M. Byrne, age 81, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family, on Nov. 26, 2019, at Overlook Medical Center in Summit, N.J. Joan is survived by her husband, Jack Byrne Sr.; six children, Jack Jr. and wife Susan, Eileen, Kathy, Nancy, Michael and wife Lisa, and Kelly; 11 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; brother, Ralph Hill Jr.; and sister, Merrily Smith. Joan was born on Aug. 22, 1938, in Elizabeth, N.J., to Ralph Sr. and Mary Hill. She was married to her high school sweetheart, Jack, for 60 years. Her most important role was as a devoted mother to her six children, creating a beautiful home where all felt truly welcomed. Her door was always open, and a place always open at her table. She will be deeply missed by all who love her. Services will be held Sunday, Dec. 1, from 4 to 8 p.m., at Higgins and Bonner Echo Lake Funeral Home, 582 Springfield Ave., Westfield, N.J. A Mass will be held at 9:30 a.m. Monday at St. Michael's Church in Cranford, N.J. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Atlantic Hospice in Summit, N.J.
