James Schaefer
Schaefer, James 9/3/1945 - 12/12/2019 Durand James Schaefer Age 74 of Durand, passed away Thursday, December 12, 2019 at his home. Funeral Services will be held at 11am Friday, December 20, 2019 at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Flint, 711 Saginaw St., Flint, MI 48502 with Pastor Dan Scheid officiating. The family will receive friends and family at the church on Friday from 10am until the time of service. Jim was born on September 3, 1945 in Grand Rapids, Michigan; the son of Walter and Louise Petersen Schaefer. Jim was a member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church. He married Karen Moon on September 16, 1972 in Muskegon, Michigan. Jim shared his passion for writing and reading through the creation of the Riprap TV Program, the Michigan-based show focused on interviewing professors and authors of academic books from around the United States for nearly twenty years. As host and executive producer of the program shown on CTN (Community Television Network) based in Ann Arbor, Jim was an exceptional conversationalist with a gift for making people feel at ease while discussing complex academic theories. The television program acted as a natural outlet from his job editing academic books and an international academic quarterly. Notably, Jim worked with the team to help develop the first book festival in Ann Arbor, Michigan. A resilient teacher who genuinely believed in building resilient students, Jim embraced the challenges of sharing his passion for his students. He taught writing at Wayne County Community College in Detroit, one of the largest and most diverse two-year colleges in the State of Michigan. He also taught at Washtenaw Community College, Ann Arbor, and co-founded Orchard Radio with Randal Baier, WCC's Internet radio station. As a life-long learner and explorer, Jim accomplished his own educational goals with fervor. His goals included graduating from Ottawa High School, Grand Rapids, where he was an accomplished musician playing seven different instruments in band and orchestra, Grand Rapids Community College (Associate of Arts in English), an undergraduate degree in English from Michigan State University, and two graduate degrees from Eastern Michigan University (a Master of Arts in teaching and writing and a Master of Arts in communications, graduating summa cum laude for both degrees). He also worked on a PhD from the University of Phoenix at the time of his death. He continued to teach, write, and research as long as he could. While completing his graduate degrees at EMU, he was co-chair of the Peace Project Task Force. Jim was a member of the advisory board for the Eastern Michigan Writing Project and a certified writing consultant for the National Writing Project. He was a member of the Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi and the National Council of Teachers of English. Jim is survived by his wife of 47 years Karen (Moon) Schaefer; sons Patrick and Elaina (Kelley) Schaefer of Weymouth, MA, Theodore and Deborah (Zick) Schaefer of Durand, MI, and Daniel and Shaina (Klackle) Schaefer of Lakewood, CO, daughter Marie Schaefer and fiance Pete Gregg of Lansing, MI; grandchildren, Freya, Trent, Nate, Torin, Myles, Ariana, and Anika. Pet: Saffron; siblings: William and Sharon (Hansen) Schaefer of Belmont, MI, and Stephen and Jan (Booth) Schaefer of Schoolcraft, MI; sister: Ellen Schaefer Bruggeman of Fort Myers, FL. Jim is also survived by several nieces, nephews, and cousins. He enjoyed family gatherings at Lake Michigan near the Muskegon area. Memorial contributions are suggested to the Memorial HealthCare, Parkinson's Support Group, 826 W King Street, Owosso, MI 48867. The family would like to thank all of the compassionate dedicated staff at the University of Michigan Hospital, McLaren's Hospice, and Care N' Assist of Corunna (Home Care). Online condolences may be sent to the family at Nelson-House.com .
