Sadly, our father, James Frederick Pope Sr., passed away Sunday, July, 5, 2020. He was 89. Known to his family and friends as Fred, he was born in Columbus, Ga., on Jan. 7, 1931. Fred was the son of Toombs Alvin Pope and Viola Stevenson Pope of Columbus, Ga. He married Marilyn Roat Pope and had two children James F. Pope Jr. and Jane Carolyn Pope. Fred was a graduate of Auburn University and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in business administration. Anyone who knew Fred knew he was an avid SEC football fan who passionately rooted for his Auburn Tigers. Fred was a 30 year veteran of his beloved United States Marine Corps and retired as a full colonel. Many family vacations revolved around Fred's annual Marine Corps summer camp trainings. In addition to his service to our country, Fred was a partner in Wallco Wholesale Electronics. Fred enjoyed ballroom dancing and wintering at St. Simons Island, Ga., with his beloved Miss Joan. Preceded in death were Fred's wife, Marilyn Roat Pope, Dallas; his companion for many years, Joan Burns, Nanticoke; brother, Douglas Pope and wife, Liz, Pensacola Fla.; and grandson, Ian James Pope, Tunkhannock. Fred leaves behind his daughter, Jane Carolyn Pope, Dallas, and companion, Stephen; son, James F. Pope Jr. and wife, Marie Yeager Pope, Missouri City, Texas; granddaughter, Alyssa Pope Hartmann and her husband, Robert Walter Hartmann III, College Station, Texas; his nephew, Richard Pope, Columbus, Ga.; and niece, Marsha Pierce, Richland, Ga. The viewing will be held from 9 to 10 a.m. Saturday at Hugh B. Hughes and Son Funeral home, Forty Fort, and internment will follow at Fern Knoll Cemetery, Dallas, with full military honors. Fred stayed connected to Auburn University by making charitable contributions to the Harbert Excellence Fund, Auburn University. In lieu of flowers the family requests making a donation in Fred's name to the Harbert Excellence Fund, Auburn University, using the link, www.AuburnGiving.org/JFP or send in a check made out to the "Harbert Excellence Fund, Auburn University" c/o H.
