In memory of
Edwards, James Sergeant 1st Class, James Edwards, answered the call to be with the Lord on September 22, 2014. He was born on May 11, 1925, in Graysport, Mississippi. He accepted the Lord at an early age. He grew up in the midst of the Great Depression, often dreaming of leaving farm life. As soon as he was eligible, he enlisted in the U.S. Army to fight for our country in WWII and the Korean Conflict. He served with distinction, earning numerous medals and honors. Among these were the Bronze Star and the Purple Heart that were earned in battles against the Germans in Italy in 1945. Later that year, he re-enlisted and was shipped off to support the war in the Pacific against the Japanese. He continued his career in El Paso, Texas where he was shown a photo of the one who would become the love of his life and wife of 64 years. James and Clara exchanged letters and phone calls for about a year. He then called and asked her to marry him. They met in person for the first time in Las Cruces, New Mexico on May 10, 1950 and were married the next day (his birthday). Out of that union came six children, Clara Helen, Zelda Leola, Wanda Yvonne (Larry), James Arthur, Samuel Earl (Belinda), and Teresa Ann. Of these children came 9 grandchildren, 7 great-grandchildren, and 5 great-great-grandchildren. His parents, Arthur and Lula Edwards; 1 brother; 3 sisters and 1 granddaughter, Artavia Denise Bateman, preceded him in death. James was a great provider and family man who retired after serving 21 years in the U.S. Army and working 23 years for USX Steel Corporation, Gary Works. James was a father figure to many outside of his immediate family and he was a good friend. James loved his wife and family tremendously. His loving wife Clara, his adoring children and all his grandchildren will miss him dearly. Wake and funeral will be held Monday, September 29, 2014. Wake is at 9:00 a.m. and the funeral is at 11:00 a.m. at Van Buren Missionary Baptist Church, 2585 Van Buren Street, Gary, IN 46407. Rev Dwight E. Mobley Sr. will officiate. Interment Service will be held Tuesday, September 30, 2014 at 10:00 a.m. at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery, 20953 West Hoff Rd., Elwood, IL 60421.
