HELEN WESTER
May 12, 1932 - December 29, 2018 OKLAHOMA CITY Helen Frances Wester was born May 12, 1932 in Oklahoma City, OK. She was the oldest child of Ernest and Mable Freeman. She was married to the love of her life, Elton L. Wester, for 63 years before he passed in May of 2013. She raised her 4 children before starting her 20-year career with the Oklahoma Department of Human Services. During her time with DHS she noticed many of her clients struggled to read hindering their ability to fill out job applications. That's when she partnered with Aarone Corwin in June of 1986 to establish the Eastern Oklahoma County Literacy Link for adults. She taught adults to read and trained countless others to do the same. She was passionate about her work and was recognized by many organizations including Reach for the Stars. She was presented with the Lieutenant Governor's Volunteer Tutor Award by First Lady, Barbara Bush. She was preceded in death by her mother and father Mabel and Ernest Freeman as well as her brother Robert Freeman. She is survived by her brothers James and Lanny Ray Freeman, as well as her four children and their spouses Karen and John Barbush, Diana and Terry Edge, Lee and Sandy Wester, and Carl Wayne Wester. She had seven grandchildren John E. Barbush, Andrea Brock, Jeremiah Barbush, Matt Mayhew, Heather Wester, Carli Wester, and Blake Wester as well as 12 great grandchildren. A celebration of Frances' life will be held Saturday, January 12, 2019, at 1:30 p.m. at the Chapel in St. Ann's Nursing Home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Midwest City Literacy Link at the Midwest City Library.
