Anderson, Grant The pearly gates of heaven opened wide to receive Grant Philip Anderson Thursday afternoon, August 6th, 2019! Grant was born on December 14, 1923 in Litchfield, Minnesota, the son of Rev. John Peter and Emelia (Sundblad) Anderson. He was Married to Genevieve Swanson for sixty years, she preceded him in death. On Valentine's Day 2005, he married Gloria Gustafson of Rockford, Michigan, whom he had met in Chicago in 1941; she survives him and will miss him dearly. He is survived by his children Karen Anderson, Stephen Anderson and Philip (Caroline) Anderson, Kristin (Steve) Anderson of TN, Karen Van Westenbrugge, Sharon Van Westenbrugge; sister, Rosemarie Anderson Osman of Silver Lake, Wisconsin; and many grandchildren will also miss him. Also preceding him in death were his two sisters, Margaret Swanson, Connie Olson; sister-in-law, Denise Anderson; and his brother, Capt. John Allen Anderson, USMC, a WWII dive bomber pilot, MIA in the Pacific. Grant graduated from Minnehaha Academy in Minneapolis in 1941, moved to Chicago and enlisted in the Navy V-5 program. He served in WWII as a Marine Night Fighter pilot in the Pacific Theater. As a member of the Marine Corps Reserve, he was recalled to duty in the Korean Conflict in 1950. During most of his civilian life, which was spent in California, he was in education as a teacher and principal; his interest and emphasis was music and directed various church choirs. Grant was also an exceptional builder his own house with terrace gardens and fruit trees, a dune buggy and his own airplane which he flew. Grant was best known for his warm and sincere friendship, a true Christian gentleman who loved his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Now he is on his way to direct the heavenly choirs in Glory. The memorial service for Grant will be 11:00 am Tuesday, August 13, 2019 at First Evangelical Covenant Church, 1933 Tremont Blvd NW, Grand Rapids, MI 49504. There will be a time of visitation with the family one hour prior to the service.
