Gerald Richard "Jerry" Behm
Gerald "Jerry" Richard Behm, 78, of Middletown, beloved husband of Elizabeth (Dyer) Behm for fifty nine years, passed away on Tuesday, December 18th at Hartford Hospital. Born in Middletown, he was the son of the late Gustave and Mildred (Rau) Behm. Jerry lived all of his life in Middletown wintering the last thirteen years in Florida. He was a veteran of the Korean Conflict serving in U. S. Army with the 101st Paratroopers, employed by Southern New England Telephone as a Project Coordinator and supervisor of Repair Bureau for thirty five years, and was a supernumerary of the Middletown Police Department. Jerry was an associate member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Venice, FL and a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church now Faith Lutheran Church in Middletown. He was very active in both church choirs, was church treasurer and served on the church council. Jerry played high school football, basketball and baseball and was inducted into the Middletown Sports Hall of Fame. He officiated high school football for fifty six years, was a Past President of State Board of Football Officials, and former Commissioner of Football Officials Association. Jerry donated time to Big Brothers, was a Little League Coach and a member of the American Legion and the Elks Club, both in Middletown. Living a life filled with sports, art, music and travel, he also loved following UCONN, the Yankees and the Giants. Besides his wife, he is survived by two sons, Gerald Behm, Jr. and his wife, Jane and Gary Behm and his wife, Susan, all of Middletown; a daughter, Kimberly Behm Kelly of Guilford; two sisters, Suzanne Castelli and her husband, George of East Hampton and Donna Negralle and her husband, Tony of Higganum; his sister-in-law, Nancy Helfant of Old Saybrook; five grandchildren, Jaron and his fiancée, T'Aja, Jessica, Brendan, Eric and Shannon and a great grandchild, Jaden. Along with his parents, Jerry was predeceased by a sister, Marilyn Cooney and a great grandchild, Kahlia. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, December 22nd at 10:00am at Faith Lutheran Church with the Rev. John J. Marschhausen and Rev. Perry Beaver officiating. Burial will be at the convenience of the family. Friends may call on Friday evening from 4:00 to 7:00pm at Doolittle Funeral Home, 14 Old Church Street, Middletown.
