George Edward Nelson Sr.
George Edward Nelson, Sr. 100, of Lynn Haven, FL, and recent years of Port St. Joe, FL went into the eternal presence of God on May 17, 2019, after a short illness. He was born in Orange Hill Community, Washington County, on December 21, 1918, to Rasmus Dinson Nelson and Nettie (Hopkins) Nelson. He is a direct descendant of his great grandparents, John Edward Nelson (aka Jens Nissen, immigrant from Haderslev, Denmark) and Sarah Hix, early settlers of the Florida Panhandle. He is survived by his son, George Edward Nelson, Jr. (Gail) of Anderson, SC, two sisters, Eldora (Nelson) Young, of Venore, TN, and Mina Bell (Nelson) Lee of Little Rock, AR, three grandsons, Jonathan Sullivan (Christina) of Palmetto Bay, FL, Geoffrey Nelson (Tiffany) of Garland, TX, Richard Nelson (Panama City, FL), two granddaughters, Cindy Fernandez (David) of Port St. Joe, FL and Jennifer Nelson of Anderson, SC, three grandsons, Denson Plunk, Lane Nelson and Ephram Nelson, and two granddaughters, Cali Fernandez and Leslie Sullivan. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth Nelson, two sons, Edward Alcus Nelson and Richard Wayne Nelson, a daughter, Lynda (Nelson) Bordelon, and a grandson, David Sullivan. During World War II he did civil service at Tyndall AFB, and afterward worked at International Paper Company until he retired. He was a bi-vocational pastor at Pilgrim's Rest, FL, Cottondale, FL, Lynn Haven, FL and Southport, FL. After moving to Port St. Joe, FL he became a member of Highland View Baptist Church, Highland View, FL. His faith was shown in the eloquence of a gentle spirit that was swift to help the needy and suffering. Visitation will be Tuesday, May 21, 2019, at 10-11 AM (CST) with service at 11 AM at Kent-Forest Lawn Funeral Home Chapel, 2403 Harrison Avenue, Panama City, FL with Reverends Ed Nelson, David Fernandez, Sr. and his son, David Fernandez, Jr. officiating. Interment will be at Evergreen Memorial Gardens, US Hwy 231 North, Panama City, FL. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to Covenant Care Hospice, Port St. Joe in George's memory.
