Gaylord Gray
Gray, Gaylord 4/13/1938 - 1/27/2019 Grand Rapids Gray, Gaylord Edwin 4/13/1938 1/27/2019 Gaylord (Jerry) Edwin Gray, age 80, of Grand Rapids, MI, passed away on Sunday, January 27. Jerry was born to Garold and Esther Gray (nee Lyons) in Ionia, MI, and graduated from Ionia High School in 1956. He enlisted in the Marine Corps Reserve and drove deliveries for the Coca Cola bottling company before moving to Grand Rapids and joining the Grand Rapids Fire Department in 1962. After 36 years of service, Jerry retired from the department as a Captain in 1998. Jerry also captained his own charter fishing business out of Grand Haven and Muskegon during the 80's and 90's. He enjoyed spending time on Lake Michigan on his Viking Sport Fish cabin cruiser, even though he never got to own his dream boat, a Bayliner. Jerry was an avid crossword puzzler and excelled at woodworking, completing numerous home improvement projects. He is survived by his daughter Cindy Hickman and her husband John, son Scott Gray and his wife Haylea, and his daughter Kris Gray; as well as his grandchildren Robert, Daniel, and Atticus; and his sisters Joan Gray and Kathie Gray. Jerry is also survived by his loving girlfriend, Roberta Theiss, with whom he spent the final (and he would say the best) years of his life. Jerry and Roberta shared a love of vacationing in warm locales and watching the Detroit Tigers. Roberta served as a passionate and vigilant caregiver for Jerry as he succumbed to dementia. A memorial open house will be held for Jerry on Saturday, March 2, 2019, from 12-4 PM at the Grand Rapids Firefighter's Hall, located at 1930 Fuller NE, Grand Rapids, MI.
