Gary Young Palm Desert - On Thursday, January 24th, 2019, Gary Young, loving husband and father, passed away at the age of 91. Gary was born on September 10, 1927, in Toronto, Canada, to Dorothy and Morris Young. He studied economics at the University of Toronto and spent his professional years in the rendering business, working for such companies as Gordon Young Ltd, Metro Rendering & Company (which he founded), and most recently Darling & Company, where he ran the western division out of San Francisco, California. Gary was also active in several professional associations such as The Toronto Junior Chamber of Commerce and The National Renderers Association, and also served The Canadian Cancer Society and The United Way. Gary married Una Mary Holmquist on May 22, 1954, in Scarborough, Ontario. They raised four children; three daughters and a son. He had a passion for golf, and wherever he lived, golf had a large presence in his life and gave him great joy. He was Club President at Scarborough Golf and Country Club, and a member of The Olympic Club in San Francisco, Shaughnessy Golf & Country Club in Vancouver, Semi Ah Moo in Blaine, Washington, and, most recently, Avondale Country Club in Palm Desert, California. In addition to his successes in golf, Gary also enjoyed playing cards, and was a talented painter. He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather, and was always greatly admired for his character, loyalty and integrity. Gary is survived by his wife Una, his four children, Ginny Grayson (husband Normand Geautreau) of Toronto, Jane Wolf (husband Doug) of San Francisco, Robert Young (wife Debbie) of Vancouver, and Liz Kennelly (husband John) of New Canaan, Connecticut, and grandchildren Erin, Alex, Justin, Adam, Emma, Owen, Katie, and Lucy. A small family memorial was held for Gary in Saint Helena, Napa, California, where he passed, on Sunday, January 26th. Donations may be made to the American or Canadian Cancer Society.
