Shirley Henderson Johnson
JOHNSON, Shirley Henderson JOHNSON, SHIRLEY HENDERSON, born on January 8, 1927, in Mexia, Tx, peacefully passed away in her home surrounded by loved ones on August 5, 2019. She is preceded in death by her husband, Gilbert Johnson, a young daughter, Kathy Johnson, and her sister, Margaret Lorrayne Neill of Tyler. She is survived by her four children: Gil and wife Suzie, Holly and husband Gary Long, Wes and wife Kathy, and Scott; seven grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews, and sister, Addie Carol Hill of New Braunfels. Shirley grew up in Henderson, Texas and began her college career attending Kilgore College, where she became a Kilgore Rangerette. While there, she received a scholarship to SMU from the Texas Scottish Rite Masons in honor of her parents, Charles and Addie Henderson. Their family served endless meals and coffee during the relief effort following the New London school disaster, worked tirelessly with the disabled children, and were active in their local Henderson community. While attending SMU, Shirley met and married Gilbert Johnson, the legendary "Old Man" passing quarterback of the SMU championship football era of the late-1940's (and also wrote his English papers). Four children kept her busy while earning a Master's in Education at North Texas. She was a business owner, Dallas ISD school teacher, lifelong PTA member, elementary football coach, Sunday school teacher, Cub Scout leader, newspaper route driver, fish cleaner, chaperone, and "get-away" driver in the paper rolling of many school friends' homes! Shirley served her husband, family, and others humbly every day of her life. She loved the Texas Rangers, believed in being a life-long learner and was a positive influence on all she met. Memorial donations may be made to the Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children, or to a charity of your choice.
