In memory of
Robert Martin "Bob" Spencer
Robert "Bob" Martin Spencer, a dedicated husband, family man, friend and mentor, passed away peacefully on Saturday, May 26, 2018 at the age of 78, surrounded by his family and close friends. Born April 15, 1940 in Clayton, Delaware to John Francis Spencer and Mary Beatrice Spencer, he married the love of his life Brenda Joyce Shane on January 18, 1958 in Clayton, Delaware before serving two years in the United States Navy, aboard the USS Conway (DD-507). After his honorable discharge and with only a high school diploma and a blue-collar worth ethic instilled in him by his parents, Bob began his 40+ year career in the retail industry as a stock boy at W.T. Grants in Dover, Delaware. Working extra hours and extra shifts to support his growing family, Bob rose to Assistant Manager and then Store Manager before moving on to bigger and better opportunities. Eventually, he went on to become a Regional Manager with Target stores before joining McCrory's, where he rose to become CEO before leaving the company in 1993. Bob finished his retail career at Michaels Stores as their Chief Merchandising Officer when he retired in 2003. After spending over 40 years in the retail industry, Bob left behind dozens of valued friends and associates as attested by the many individuals who maintained friendships with Bob and Joyce long after his retirement. In retirement, when Bob wasn't enjoying the second love of his life… his daily round of golf, he and Joyce spent it with their family. If there was a football, baseball, basketball game, marching band competition, drill team show or music recital with a grandchild involved, you would find them in attendance. He and Joyce also loved traveling with their close friends, Bob and Patty Currey, and visited places all over the U.S., (as long as a golf course was nearby!) Bob is survived by Joyce, his wife of 60 years, their 3 children and their spouses: Pam & Mike Snyder; Maribeth & Kevin Canole; and Bobby & Jenny Lynn Spencer; 10 grandchildren and their spouses: Natalie & Brian Schendzielos; Shane & Kendall Snyder; Spencer & Erin Canole; Weston & Cristen Canole; Brayden Canole, Geddy and Raine Spencer, along with 3 great-grandchildren; Brynn, Grant and Luke Schendzielos. Bob also leaves behind two siblings, his older brother Jackie Spencer and younger sister Linda Davis, along with many family members in Delaware and Maryland. He was preceded in death by daughter, Brenda Lynn Spencer Lawler in 2007. A service to celebrate Bob's life will be held Wednesday, May 30, 2018, at Mulkey-Mason Funeral Home in Lewisville. The family will receive friends from 10 to 11 a.m. with the service beginning at 11 a.m., followed by an Interment at Roselawn Memorial Park in Denton. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions to be made to the American Brain Tumor Association ( abta.org ) in memory of Brenda. The family would like to take this opportunity to thank Bob's doctors, nurses, sitters and the staff at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital in Denton for the amazing devotion and compassion shown to Bob over the past two weeks. Words cannot express how grateful our family is, and forever will be, not only for their care and concern for Bob but also how they took our family under their wings throughout this journey. We will be forever grateful. Bob, Dad, Mr. G - We are going to miss your influence in our lives. You were the definition of a role model, living your life with Faith, Humility, Loyalty, Determination and Honor. Your light has shown us the way and we will do our best to follow.
