In memory of
James Edward Johnson
Johnson, James Edward 2/7/1939 - 4/20/2019 Spring Lake James Edward Johnson, age 80, passed away on April 20, 2019 after a long struggle with COPD. He was born February 7, 1939 in Muskegon, Michigan to Harold and Edith (Stoken) Johnson. He was an avid outdoorsmen and preferred it over school and books. He enlisted in the Marine Corps where he met his first wife, Yasuko (Shibuya) while stationed in Japan. He returned to Michigan to be closer to family and friends and to raise his children, Dean and Kimberly (Niebling). When not providing for his family he enjoyed hunting (deer, birds, small game, mushrooms, etc.) and golfing. Widowed at 42, he met his second wife, AddaLea (Hyatt-Bitner) through family friends where he embarked on raising teenagers once again. After retiring, he wintered in Florida where he could enjoy golf year around. You could always find him on the back patio at four o'clock for cocktail hour to tell tales and solve the problems of the world. He was known for his good sense of humor and ribbing. As his disease progressed, clubs were set aside for books and a slower pace of life but there was always 4 o'clock cocktail hour where friends gathered to share stories of the day. Jim was preceded in death by his parents, first wife and sisters, Lois and Nina. He is survived by his second wife, children, daughter-in-law Mariko, son-in-law Jim, grandchildren Calvin, Alex and Nicole Johnson, step-children Eric, Kurt and Bart Bitner and step-grandchildren Megan, Erin and Owen Bitner, brothers, Dale, Don, Ron and Kurt and sisters Shirley, Beverly and Karen and several cousins, nieces and nephews. A private military burial is being scheduled. In lieu of flowers or donations, please raise your glass for one last "cocktail" hour and help solve the problems of the world.
