Grace Louise (Bishop) Russell
Grace Louise Bishop Russell of Bolivar, MO and formerly of Corning, NY died at age 92 on August 26, 2018. Mrs. Russell, daughter of the late Nettie F. Brewer Bishop and Arthur F. Bishop was born in Guilford, CT in 1926, graduated from Guilford High School in 1944 and attended the University of Connecticut. She was married to the late Ernest E. Russell whom she married in 1946. Mrs. Russell was preceded in death by her husband of 65 years, the late Ernest E. Russell, her brother, Albert Bishop and her son, Michael A. Russell. She is survived by daughters G. Louise (Duncan) Meadows of Bolivar, MO, Martha E. (Gerald) Zalewski of Enfield, CT, and son, Douglas E. (Shellie) Russell of Kannapolis, NC; grandchildren Julie Meadows (James) Jones, Daniel (Jodi) Meadows, Robyn Zalewski (Mark) Gostomski, Stephanie Zalewski, Michael (Susan) Russell and step grand-daughter Holly (Erik) Schlosser; her brother, Harold (Colleen) Bishop of Woodstock, CT; sisters-in-law, Barbara Bishop of Guilford, CT and Betsy Russell Bird of Meriden, CT, brothers-in-law Elmer Russell of Guilford, CT and Clarence (Betty) Russell of Hinesburg, VT; as well as many great grandchildren, nephews and nieces. Mrs. Russell was a lifetime volunteer in the Corning, NY area having served in many positions in the Girl Scout organization and taught First Aid for the American Red Cross. She served as a Trustee, Sunday School teacher and Superintendent. in the United Methodist Church and later as a Deacon in the First Congregational Church, was active in Parent Teacher groups and was a Cub Scout Den Mother. Grace and her husband were long-time volunteers for the local Hospice organization working with patients and families. Also, they were active with the American Field Service as a host-parents and officers. They hosted many Experiment in International Living students and foreign teachers from the American Host program. They participated in disaster relief in Ohio and South Carolina. Mrs. Russell was a founding trustee of the Corning- Painted Post Memorial and Funeral Society. For 20 years, she served on the Tax Counseling service of the IRS/AARP program in Steuben County, both co-teaching the county volunteers and counseling. She received the Errol Shand award in 1978 from the United Way organization in which she served and chaired the Budget Committee, later serving as a Vice President of Budget. She served for over 39 years as a volunteer for the Corning Meals on Wheels program and she repaired books for the Southeast Steuben County Library and the Polk County Library in Bolivar, MO. She belonged to several genealogy groups and had spent many years doing research in that field with her husband. A memorial service will be held at the Bolivar United Methodist Church, Bolivar, MO on Friday, September 14, 2018. A second memorial celebration will be held at the First Congregational Church, 122 Broad St., Guilford, CT on Thursday, September 20, 2018 at 11:00 am with private burial at the Alderbrook Cemetery, Guilford, CT in the Bishop family plot. Flowers will be provided by the family while memorial donations may be given to: Friends of the Southeast Steuben County Library, 300 Nasser Civic Center Plaza, Corning, NY 14830; to CareFirst (formerly Southern Tier Hospice and Palliative Care), 3805 Meads Creek Road, Painted Post, NY 14870; or to CMH Hospice, 113 East Broadway, Bolivar, MO 65613, or a charity of one's choice.
