In memory of
George VonBretzel, age 96 of St. Augustine, FL passed away September 9, 2018 at his home. George was born December 12, 1921 in Yokohama, Japan to Russian parents. His family had escaped Russia during the Russian Revolution of 1917 and had they had temporarily relocated to Japan. He came to the United States in 1923 where he spent his youth in New York City and Watertown, New York. He graduated from St. Lawrence University in 1947 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry. His completion of his degree had been interrupted by his service in World War II as a combat infantry man in the U.S. Army in the European Theater. His decorations included the World War II Victory Ribbon, Good Conduct Medal, American Theater Ribbon, EAME Theater Ribbon and three Bronze Service Stars. After the war he joined the Central Intelligence Agency where he served in the U.S. and abroad as an operations officer. Upon retirement from the agency in 1973, he continued to work for the agency on a contract basis utilizing his fluency in the Russian language until 1992. George has resided in St. Augustine FL since 1980 where he was a member of the Officer's Club, Elks Club, the Navy League, and the Marsh Creek Country Club. He is survived by his wife of 38 years, Mary. His son Gregory Von Bretzel (Linda), and daughter Sandy Cohn (Marc). Step sons: Brian Conlon (Susan) and Scott Conlon. Step daughter: Jennifer Lartiz (John). Eight grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren. Memorial services will be held 10:00 AM Saturday at Craig Funeral Home Chapel. Burial with Military honors will be held later at St. Paul's Rock Creek Cemetery, Washington, DC.
