In memory of
Bruce Vander Laan
Vander Laan, Bruce 11/21/1952 - 9/9/2019 Bruce Edward VanderLaan passed away unexpectedly on September 9, 2019, in Grand Rapids, at the age of 66. Bruce was preceded in death by his parents, Gordon (Gail) VanderLaan and Hanna VanderLaan, as well as his siblings, Gordon VanderLaan II, Dawn VanderLaan, and Rose Bacon. He will be lovingly remembered by his daughters, Julie VanderLaan and Jamie (John) Kellogg; grandchildren, Indi Vandenberg, Gabrielle, Jack, and Ava Kellogg; sister, Kathy (Tony) Hall; as well as many friends and family. Bruce graduated from Union High School in 1970 and went on to a 34 year career at General Motors. But his heart was on the race track. Bruce was well-known and respected in the West Michigan Racing Community. He was a natural behind the wheel earning 44 feature wins and winning five track championships within a five year period at Berlin Raceway. He was inducted into the Michigan Motor Sports Hall of Fame in 2004 and the Berlin Hall of Fame in 2009. In Bruce's words, "I liked the competition. It was a rush. You've got to see how good you are. If you've got no chance of winning, what the hell are you doing out there? I had fun. I always drove a clean race. I'm satisfied." Always quick to make a joke, Bruce was easy company. Surely his stubbornness helped him win so many races, but underneath he was tender-hearted and compassionate. His easy-going happiness and sense of humor were contagious. Under that 'tough love' exterior, was a lovable man. Bruce's family will greet visitors on Friday, September 13, from 10:30 am - 12:00 pm at Stroo Funeral Home, where a service celebrating Bruce's life will begin at 12:00 pm, with Celebrant Rich Karelse, officiating. Private family interment will be in Winchester Cemetery.
