Died October 21, 2019. Resident of Rye, New York, formerly of Scarsdale, New York. Born August 3 1921 in Deal, New Jersey to Belle and Samuel Stern. Devoted wife of Peter Strauss for 60 years. Loving mother of three children: John Strauss, Eileen Strauss and Sally Strauss and grandmother to seven grandchildren who were central in her life: Jennifer Strauss, David Stoecker-Strauss, Jill Murdoch, Amy Murdoch, Alexandra Tomback, Ariel Tomback and Drew Tomback. Sister to Eileen Innes, her best friend throughout their lives. During World War II, Barbara served very proudly as a Lieutenant in the US Naval Reserves (Waves), as a communications officer, a service she always considered to be a highlight in her life. She earned a BS in Education at SUNY Oswego. She was highly involved in civic work, which she believed in passionately. She served eight years tirelessly as President of the League of Women Voters of Westchester, and Chair of the County Budget Study. She also served as Board Member of the Scarsdale League of Women Voters as well as county representative, and Marketing Director of the New York State League of Women Voters. She was involved with Scarsdale Parks and Recreation Advisory Council, the Scarsdale Board of Education and Village Council, the local YWCA, Cub Scouts and Girl Scouts.
