HAMPTON - Douglas McLean Woolard passed away peacefully at home on Sunday, April 17, 2005. He was born Dec. 1, 1924, in Newport News, Va., to the late Charlie C. and Carrie Mae Atkins Woolard. Douglas was preceded in death by his brothers, Cecil E. and Meredith L. Woolard of Newport News and Hampton; and also a sister, Doris Faye Moore of Bath, N.C. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Dorothy Nixon Woolard; his brothers and sisters, Emmerson T. and his wife, Helen, of Newport News, Donald R. and his wife, Elizabeth, of Raleigh, N.C., Elva Mae Boone of Washington, N.C., and Vivian Ann Swanson and her husband, Bill, of Toledo, Ohio. He served his country in the United States Navy from 1943-46 in the South Pacific and retired from the Newport News Shipyard after 45 years of service. He was a member of the Progressive Club of the Shipyard. Mr. Woolard was a 32nd degree Mason, member of Bremond Masonic Lodge #241 A.F. & A.M., the Khedive Temple, Shrine Oriental Band, also served as a past president, Shrine Golf Club, also past president, Peninsula Shrine Club and Newport News Scottish Rite. He enjoyed playing golf and being in the band. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 20, at Memorial Baptist Church, (corner of Kecoughtan Road and Newport News Avenue, Hampton) officiated by the Rev. Wayne Harrison. Burial immediately following at Peninsula Memorial Park. The family will receive friends 6 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at Parklawn-Wood Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to the Shrine Cripple Children Hospital, c/o Bremond Masonic Lodge #241, 12735 Warwick Blvd., Newport News, VA 23606, or Memorial Baptist Church Building Fund, 317 Lee St., Hampton, VA 23669. Arrangements are under the care of Parklawn-Wood Funeral Home, 2551 N. Armistead Ave., Hampton.
