Howard R. Newquist Sr. Born: January 5, 1924 Died: June 23, 2021 Howard R. Newquist Sr. (97) passed away peacefully at home on June 23rd surrounded by his family. Born to Mabel and Harvey Newquist Sr. on Jan 5, 1924. Howard grew up the oldest of the five boys. Howard met his wife Irene while attending St Ambrose College in Davenport Iowa. He was a WWII veteran and spent his time in the Philippines. Howard worked for his father at the Newquist Foundry for a couple years, Blackhawk loans, and Mercury Acceptance Corp. Later, he finished his financial career as President of Sycamore Community Credit Union from 1967 to 1986. Howard was a Kiwanian for many years and loved selling peanuts and became a Kiwanis Fellow. He also was an avid Ham radio operator and member of The Kishwaukee Radio Club. He enjoyed many field days and hamfests. He also spent time educating younger members and future members in the art of Morse code. Howard and Irene enjoyed both their homes in DeKalb and Florida. Their homes were always open to many friends and family. He and Irene spent many Christmases in Florida with them. Howard had a hobby of collecting cars He always had some unique cars especially his convertibles. He was always doing something interesting playing his piano, he also was a clarinetist and violin player. In his later years he enjoyed sitting on his deck, with a Jim Beam Manhattan, a cigar and his faithful companion Ellie, his dog by his side. He will be missed by all with his quick wit and funny jokes. We all loved mom and dad dearly, they were the best! He was preceded in death by his wife Irene, his parents, Harvey Sr. and Mabel Newquist and two brothers; Richard and Donald. He is survived by his five children; Mary (Bryan) Rice, Howard Jr (Tamara) Newquist, Jane (Craig) Buttrey, Stephen (Ann) Newquist, Thomas Newquist (Sharon Burke). Howard is also survived by his two brothers Harvey Jr., and John Newquist. He has eight grandchildren; Michael and Mark Rice, Christopher, Chad, Colby, Newquist and Nicolette Mense, Andrew and Lauren Buttrey. They all enjoyed celebrations, Florida time and Harry Potter with him. Howard had Four Great-Grandchildren; Owen Rice, Mason Mense, Ella and Adalyn Buttrey. He has now joined his dear wife Irene in heaven. As we always heard, this is WA9TXW signing out for the last time. Funeral Mass will be held on Tuesday, June 29, 2021, at 10:30am at St. Mary Catholic Church in DeKalb with Father Dean Russell officiating. Burial will be held immediately following the service at St. Mary Catholic Cemetery in DeKalb. Visitation will be held on Monday, June 28, 2021, from 5:00pm – 7:00pm at Finch Funeral Home.
