Hazel Johnson Hazel Johnson (née Hamby) passed away peacefully at age 92 surrounded by family in her home in Desert Hot Springs on May 13, 2021. She was preceded in death by her loving husband Johnny (G.V.); sons Robert, Kenny, and Guy; and sisters Maxine and Ruth. She is survived by her brother Bill; cousin Sharon; daughter-in-law Nicole; grandchildren Wendy, Carmen, Amber, Rachel, Dylan, Paul, Kelly, and Christopher; stepdaughters Gail and Sherry; great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews. Hazel was born in Arkansas and raised in Chicago. She moved to the desert in 1948 with her first husband where she was postmaster at Whitewater before moving to Desert Hot Springs and working for Horton's Market and then Bank of America. Hazel saw many changes in the Coachella Valley over the years and regaled her friends and family with many stories. Johnny and Hazel also had a home in Pinedale, Wyoming where they had many good friends and memories. She will be greatly missed by her friends and family. Hazel's motto in life was "It's better to laugh than to cry!"
