In memory of
Paul Scalise
Paul Scalise (Peter Paul Scalise Jr.), 94, of Birmingham, died on May 7, 2021. He was born in Valdosta, GA to Peter Paul Scalise (Pete) and Leah Elizabeth O'Keefe Scalise. Until his teenage years, he lived all over the Southeast (esp. loving Jacksonville, FL) as his father traveled with GM, eventually settling in Birmingham. Paul graduated from Ramsay High School and, later, from Notre Dame University where he majored in economics but excelled in languages, especially German, and the Glee Club. He married Frances McDevitt in 1951, worked at TCI, became an industrial steel salesman, joined the National Guard during the Korean conflict, was called up with the Ala. National Guard in 1961 and was sent to France during the Berlin wall crisis, went to school on the GI Bill and learned all there was to know about computers in the late 1960s and 1970s. Although in later years he would laugh at how little he knew, at the time he helped bring computers into the Air Force and taught computer classes at Jeff State. He retired from the Air Force as a Lt. Colonel. He loved his family and loved introducing his children to wonderful places, foods and pastimes (like chess, yoga and option trading). He loved playing games and enjoyed his regular poker group for many years. He was a subtle wit and we are still laughing at his gems. He was a long-time member of Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church, where he was choir director in the 1950s and 60s. He was predeceased by his wife, Frances, his daughter, Joan Marie, his parents, his brother Joseph, and his sisters, Gloria Scalise Eubank and Claire Scalise Bouton. Wonderful memories of his happy nature and love will comfort his many family and friends who survive including his children Margaret Scalise, Elizabeth Scalise, Leah Scalise, Ellen Scalise, Pierre and Kiki Scalise, and Catherine and Buddy Lewis; his grandchildren Sarah Frances Lewis (Antonio Allen), Joseph D. Lewis, Patrick G. Scalise and Peter P. Scalise; his sister-in-law, Mary Burnet, his brother-in-law, Bill Eubank; and many nieces, nephews, honorary children and friends. The family is planning a private memorial service. I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will live even though he dies. John 11:25
