Janice Caren Lilien Dedicated career to human service, of Cranford Janice Caren Lilien, age 71, died peacefully in her home in Cranford on May 3, 2021. She was surrounded by loving family after a prolonged battle with lymphoma. Ms. Lilien, known as Jan to family and friends, grew up in Springfield. She was a Bat Mitzvah at Beth Ahm, and was a 1968 graduate from Jonathan Dayton High School. In High School she was the president of the United Synagogue Youth among other extracurricular activities. She earned a BA in Psychology from the University of Michigan and a MSW from Hunter College. Jan's Jewish faith taught her the importance of Tikkun a/am-healing the world-an ethic that inspired a career dedicated to helping the most vulnerable in our society. Jan held leadership positions in multiple human service organizations, including the YWCA of Union County, the Girl Scouts of Greater Essex and Hudson Counties, and Community Access of Elizabeth. Her life's work serving women, girls, the disabled, and those battling substance abuse was imbued with a passion for humanity, dignity, and equity. Jan inspired and empowered all those she worked with. She received many awards including: NJBIZ Best Fifty Woman in Business in 2019; Union County Women of Excellence Award from the Union County Commission on the Status of Women, and the Unsung Lifetime Hero Award from Historic Midtown Elizabeth. Jan was an active member of the Rotary Club of Elizabeth and the Union County Nonprofit Consortium. Ms. Lilien married Richard W. Brown in August of 1975. They shared a half-century of happiness together living in Brooklyn, Rhode Island, and New Jersey. Ms. Lilien is survived by her husband Richard, sons Jonathan and Michael, granddaughter Lilah-Rae, and her older sister Marcia. A graveside service will take place on Wednesday, May 5, 2021, at Beth Israel Cemetery, 1098 Woodbridge Center Dr., Woodbridge, NJ 07095, at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made in her honor to the YWCA of Union County. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Menorah Chapels at Millburn, 908-964-1500
