Kaare Mehl Story City - Kaare Mehl, 84, of Story City, went home to be with our Lord and Savior on April 26th, 2021. Kaare was born in Rosendal, Norway on June 26th, 1936 to Ivar and Solveig Mehl. Kaare had one sister, Aase Marie, who he loved dearly. Kaare moved to his family farm in Omvikdalen, Norway during the German occupation in April of 1940. Kaare then moved to the United States in November 1952 to provide a better life for his family and settled in Story City and resided there for the rest of his life. Kaare graduated from Story City High School in 1956. 3 years later he enlisted into the Army. Once back from serving, he started working in the construction business and eventually created his own business, Mehl Construction. In his later years, he worked for the Roland-Story Middle School as a custodian for over 10 years where he made lifelong relationships with both students and teachers. He retired in 2017 to take care of the love of his life in her final days. In 2018 Kaare started a Norwegian baking business with his daughter, Jeanie. Kaare married his soulmate, Martha on April 1st, 1961 in Rosendal, Norway, and the two eventually moved back to Story City, Iowa to begin their journey of life and start a family together. Kaare was known around town for the love and care he provided for his wife especially when she was diagnosed with Alzheimer's. Kaare and Martha were married for 60 years and raised two children, Jeanie Stephens, and Jon (Michelle) Mehl. Kaare enjoyed spending time with family, baking, fishing in Norway, watching Roland-Story ball games, and being a follower of Christ. His family and faith were the most important things in his life. Kaare is survived by a daughter, Jeanie Stephens of Story City; a son, Jon (Michelle) Mehl of Story City; three granddaughters Monica Mehl, Krista Mehl, and Kari Stephens; his sister Aase Marie of Rosendal, Norway; and many nieces and nephews that reside in Norway. He was greeted at the gates of heaven by his wife, Martha Mehl, and his parents. The family would like to thank the staff of Bethany Life, Suncrest Hospice, and Mary Greeley Medical Center. The family would also like to thank the Story City community for the support they have provided the family during these troubling times. A visitation for both Kaare and Martha will be held on May 14th, 2021 at Immanuel Lutheran Church from 5-7pm. A Celebration of Life will be held on May 15th, 2021 at Immanuel Lutheran Church at 10:30. Wearing Norwegian costumes to the services are encouraged to honor Kaare and Martha's Norwegian heritage. Donations can be made to Immanuel Lutheran Church and Bethany Life both in Story City, Iowa. Soderstrum Funeral Home is entrusted with arrangements.
