Donald Brockschmidt
On February 24, 2021, Donald Dwayn "Don" Brockschmidt passed away at the age of 86. Don was born on January 7, 1935 near his grandfather's farm in Billings, Montana. He grew up in the Chicago area and was educated primarily at Catholic grade schools and high schools. Despite being born in the middle of the Great Depression and his family "not being well off"to borrow his euphemism of choicehe only spoke fondly of his childhood and his loving, hard-working parents. In 1959, he graduated with distinction from the University of Minnesota with a degree in mechanical engineering. Don worked in the aerospace industry for more than 30 years, including at Boeing, where he worked on the Apollo program and helped put a man on the Moon, and at Rockwell, where he was involved in the Space Shuttle program from its early stages. Don was a big man6'3"and athletic. He began playing tennis in high school and played regularly until he was in his late 50s, when he switched to golf. He was a much better tennis player than golfer, but derived a tremendous amount of joy from golf and the relationships and camaraderie it engendered. Don had a wonderful and very dry sense of humor. He loved cigars, reading, classical music, the Republican Party, and above all Mary, his wife of 62 years. In addition to Mary, Don is survived by his sister Marlene, his brother Jim, his five children and their spousesSusan Frazer (Dave), Sally Pierotti (Vic), Ann Hedges (Jeff), Lynne Wade (Jim), and Bill Brockschmidt (Karina)and his twelve grandchildren and five great-grandchildren, who knew and loved him as "Grandpa Don." A funeral service will be held on April 10, 2021, at 10:00 a.m. at St. Cecilia Church in Tustin. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Casa Teresa, www.casateresa.org , P.O.
