Barbara Louise Johnson 1946 - 2021 Barbara Louise Johnson was born in Atlanta, Georgia. She was adopted at birth and grew up in Perry, Georgia…where she was called Bobbi Lou. After graduating high school, she moved to Boston, Massachusetts where she attended Boston University, graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Health Science - Physical Education. However, she didn't stop there during her lifetime. She received degrees in Physical Education Sports Psychology - Adaptive P.E. Specialist; a Master of Arts in Counseling - Education; the Marriage, Family and Child Counseling (MFCC) Program, and more. Barbara attended many conferences and workshops and was often an invited speaker, including workshops in both Paris, France, and Lima, Peru. She actually developed guidelines for two school districts for their Adaptive P.E. programs. Upon graduation from Boston University, Barbara taught P.E. in North Attleborough, Massachusetts for three years, then was a P.E./Health Science Teacher in Las Vegas, Nevada for three years after that, and in 1981, she moved to Tracy, California, where she taught adaptive P.E. for students with disabilities and won Teacher of the Year. She was known as Bobbi while in Tracy. In 1984, Barbara was hired by the Desert Sand Unified School District in La Quinta, California, as an Adaptive P.E. teacher and worked for the district for 18 years. Barbara lived the remainder of her life in Palm Desert, California. In the Coachella Valley area, she was called Barbara. While teaching during the day, she began to take courses at night and on weekends. Barbara had a dream of becoming a Marriage & Family Therapist (MFT). She received her M.A. in Counseling - Education in 1989 from California State University San Bernardino, California. She also completed graduate work in the MFCC Program, Chapman University in Palm Desert, California in 1991. Although she continued to work with the school district, she perfected her counseling abilities and worked with a number of foundations within the Coachella Valley area. In 2002, Barbara retired from teaching and continued counseling within the valley. She also worked with various organizations in the Desert until 2020, offering workshops and classes in parenting, domestic violence, crisis intervention programs, etc. Barbara died from cancer on February 27th, 2021. She will be missed by her many friends. A private celebration of life will be held. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Barbara L. Johnson's name to the following sites: American Cancer Society: www.cancer.org/involved/donate.html or www.desertabilitycenter.org , which is a nonprofit that provides opportunities for children with disabilities to be active and included with their community in the Desert area.
