Francis "Frank" Barrett
On March 3, 2021, Francis C. "Frank" Barrett, age 95, beloved husband of Rita M. Barrett, died peacefully in his home at Mercy Ridge, Timonium, MD. He was born on January 13, 1926, in Fells Point. He was the devoted father of 4 daughters, 11 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by Rita, her 2 children, 4 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren. Frank, a.k.a. "Newt", "Spike", "Jolly Green Giant", and "Dziadzius", was predeceased by his first wife, Jeanette Wolczyk Barrett (1987) – to whom he was married for 39 years – his parents Francis M. Barrett and Petronella Pondo Barrett Sullivan, his brother Charles "Clay" Barrett Sr. and his wife Vera, and his son-in-law Robert Krauss. He was educated in parochial and public schools. In 1944 he left Baltimore Polytechnic Institute to enlist in the U.S. Army Air Corps, serving in North Africa and the Middle East. After being honorably discharged in 1946, he completed high school and then attended Loyola College, where he played basketball during "The Reitz Era" along with teammates and friends Jim Lacy, Vince Gallagher and his cousin Jack Simanski. He graduated in 1950 with a B.S. degree in Business Administration. He began his career selling insurance and was a founding partner of an independent insurance agency. He was active in the American Legion Parkville Post 183, where he served as Post Commander in 1964, and as the Baltimore County Commander in 1965. He chaired many statewide and national Legion committees, including 52 years as Maryland's Trust Director of the Legionnaire Insurance Trust. Five of those years he served as Chairman of the Board. He represented the 6th District on the Baltimore County Council 1966 - 1974 and was Council Chairman for two years. He was a committed member of St. Ursula's Church and was active in the Knights of Columbus and the Holy Name Society. Visitation will be held at the Ruck Towson Funeral Home, Inc., 1050 York Rd. (beltway exit 26), Towson, MD 21204 on Tuesday from 4-7 PM where a vigil service will begin at 6 PM. Funeral Mass will be held at Saint Ursula Catholic Church, 8801 Harford Rd, Parkville, MD 21234 on Wednesday at 11 AM and will be livestreamed. Interment at Gardens of Faith Cemetery. Due to gathering size limits, there may be a wait to enter the building, social distancing is required, and face masks must be worn at the funeral home, church and cemetery.
