Garry Baum October 1, 1960 - March 2, 2021 Columbia, South Carolina - Phillip Garry "Mickey" Baum, age 60, of Columbia, South Carolina, passed away peacefully in his sleep on March 2, 2021, 20 months after his initial cancer diagnosis. He was preceded in death by his parents, Bernard Harry Baum and Ann Briskin Baum. He is survived by his brother, Harry Baum and his wife Carol Masters Baum; sister, Cheryl Baum; sister, Rebecca Baum Lourie and her husband Joel Lourie, all of whom are grateful he was their brother; nieces and nephews who adored their Uncle Garry; his partner and the love of his life Andy Carroll; and countless friends who feel blessed to have known him. Garry was born in Camden, South Carolina on October 1, 1960. He graduated from the University of South Carolina in 1982 with a Bachelor's Degree in Journalism. He was employed at the Myrtle Beach Sun News, the Myrtle Beach Blue Jays, and the South Carolina Election Commission, before finally retiring as the Director of Faculty Services at the University of South Carolina Law School in 2020. Garry deeply loved spending time with his family and friends, and the feeling was mutual. He was an avid supporter of all University of South Carolina sports teams. He also enjoyed tailgating, traveling, camping, conducting temple services, and helping others. Garry devoted much of his life to the service of others. Over the span of almost 2 decades, he held several leadership roles, and tirelessly volunteered in the community while a member of the Myrtle Beach and Columbia chapters of the Jaycees. He was a member of the SC Jaycees Palmetto Corp Honor Group, and was also honored as a member of the United States JCI Senate for his accomplishments and service in the Jaycees. Garry was also a very active member of Temple Beth El, in Camden, and the South Carolina Jewish Historical Society. In line with his giving spirit, he gifted his body and medical history to the University of South Carolina School of Medicine for education and research purposes.
