Judith Johnston Scott RUTHERFORDTON - Judith Johnston Scott, 78, passed away on February 27, 2021, surrounded by her family. Judy was born in Seattle, WA on September 28, 1942 to the late Charles J. Johnston and Emogene Beck Johnston. The middle of three girls, Judy spent her childhood in Bellevue, WA and Goodnews Bay, AK. An adventurer at heart, Judy rode horses on her family farm, skied the slopes of the northwest, surfed the waves of Hawaii and hiked the mountain passes of Alaska. She attended Helen Bush School in Seattle, Goucher College in Baltimore, and later earned a M.S. in Organic Chemistry from UNC Chapel Hill. In 1965, she met Gordon Scott of Forest City, NC at the officers club in the Subic Bay, Philippines. After a whirlwind romance of ten days, the two married. They spent the first year of their marriage traveling the world before returning to North Carolina to attend graduate school. They soon bought a farm outside of Bostic, NC where they made a home for the next 50 years. A lifelong learner with diverse interests, Judy did lab research, she taught classes, and for many years worked at Scott Vending Company. She also believed in charity, working behind the scenes to support others in her community. Judy attended Saint Francis Episcopal Church where she enjoyed serving on the Altar Guild for more than 40 years. More recently, she served on the board of directors for Hospice of the Carolina Foothills. Judy will be remembered for her love of nature; particularly of flowers and birds, but most of all for the joy she took in her family. She was preceded in death by her parents and sister Veronica Nicholas. Judy (Nina to her grandchildren) is survived by her loving husband Gordon Scott; sister Christina Johnston-Bloom of Middlebury, VT; daughters Liza Scott ter Kuile and husband David ter Kuile of Franklin, TN, and Maggie Scott Keeler and husband Ben Keeler of Winchester, MA; grandchildren Anna, Katherine, Dawson and Mollie ter Kuile and Georgia and Nathan Keeler; extended family; many dear friends; and beloved pets Scooter and Max. A private family service will be held at Saint Francis Church on Saturday, March 6. Friends can view the services online beginning at 2 PM at https://www.stfrancisrutherfordton.org Memorials may be made to Hospice of The Carolina Foothills, Post Office Box 336, Forest City, North Carolina 28043.
