Paul Engelder
Paul David Engelder 1934 2021 Lake Forest, CA Paul Engelder passed away on January 2, 2021, at age 86, from COVID-related causes. Paul was born in Detroit MI, to Rev. Conrad J. H. Engelder and his wife Ruth (Linsenmann), youngest of three boys. His father was pastor at Nazareth Lutheran Church in Detroit; while his mother assisted with the ministry, played the organ, and taught Sunday school. Paul was fascinated with science and electronics, and bought his first short-wave radio at age 14. He excelled in school, and began studies at the University of Michigan in 1952. He met Lorraine Alice Miller there, and they married on June 11, 1955. Paul graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering in 1956, and together with Lorraine moved to southern California, to start a career in the aerospace/defense industry. He became an expert in guidance technology, working primarily for Northrop and McDonnell-Douglas; plus several years in the oil industry, applying guidance instruments to bore-hole drilling. He is named on 3 patents for his innovative work. He retired in 1995, after a 39-year career. Paul and Lorraine started their family soon after moving to California, and had 4 boys between 1957 and 1962. They bought a vacant lot in Palos Verdes, and completed a custom house in 1960. This was the "family home" for 44 years -- where the boys grew up, and returned later for holidays and reunions, with partners and grandchildren. Paul was devoted to family; he provided a stable loving home-base -- plus numerous vacations and outdoor adventures. He passed along to his sons a passion for science and physics; taught skills in working with wood, metal, or electronics; and instilled confidence to explore and try things. He was honest, warm, and generous, and gave his sons a great start in life. Paul and Lorraine were raised in Lutheran households, and practiced their faith throughout their lives. They were active members of several congregations -- most notably Christ Lutheran Church and School in San Pedro, where they were members for over 40 years, and where their four sons attended school through 8th grade. In retirement, Paul kept busy with home projects, travel, photography, volunteer work, and genealogy. He and Lorraine left Palos Verdes and moved to Laguna Woods in 2004; and then to Lake Forest in 2017. Paul is survived by his wife Lorraine; sons David (Kathy), Gary (Marcie), Roger, and Tom (Suzanne); 6 grandchildren; and 3 great-grand-children. He was pre-deceased by his brothers, Ted and Conrad.
