Mildred Canon FLORENCE -- Mildred "Mimi" Ellen (Bowers) Cannon, 95, entered into eternal rest on Friday, February 12, 2021, at Ingram Health Care Center at The Manor of Florence. Born January 31, 1926 in Hagerstown, Md, she was the daughter of Russell J. and Alma (Olsen) Bowers, who preceded her in death. She is also preceded in death by her husband Rev. Dr. Ralph Alston Cannon, brother Victor "Bus" Bowers and a sister, Dorothy "Dot" June (Bowers) Hammond. Her degrees are from Hagerstown High School, Strayer Business College, and Lynchburg College. While working on a Masters Degree in Divinity at Yale University she met her husband of 54 years, fellow classmate Ralph A. Cannon. Following her work in Christian Education with the Disciples of Christ Church in Ohio, they were married in 1953. Until his retirement, they enjoyed a partnership in 9 churches in the SC Conference of the United Methodist Church (UMC). As a gifted musician and trained religion program director, Mimi took pride in her lifelong role as minister's wife and choir member. Into her 80's she continued to volunteer at election polls and to be active in choirs, soup kitchen, and other activities at Bethel UMC in Charleston, SC. She is survived by two daughters, Cynthia Faye Cannon Poindexter of Eugene, OR and Teresa "Terry" Lynn Cannon of Lumberton, NC; a son, Jeffrey Morris Cannon and his wife Harriet of Durham, NC and loving and caring cousins, nieces, and nephews. The family will hold a private graveside service. Memorials may be made to "Yale Divinity School Class of 1953 Endowed Scholarship Fund," 409 Prospect Street, New Haven, CT 06511, or the charity of one's choice.
