William (Bill) Gorman Kelley, 72, passed away peacefully at his Huntington Beach home on February 7, 2021, comforted by his wife Margaret and daughter Kennedy. He was regarded as one of the finest criminal trial attorneys in Orange County. As a longtime Orange County Public Defender, Bill was known as a strong advocate against the death penalty. He handled many death penalty cases and was defense counsel for the infamous mass murderer Charles Ng, in 1999. Later, he was made the Director of the Associate Defender's office, the third branch of the Public Defender offices that focused on homicide and death penalty cases. Bill grew up in Chula Vista, CA as the second of eight children of Glenn and Joyce Kelley. He graduated from UCSD with a BA degree in Visual Arts in 1976 and then enrolled in the USD Law School graduating in 1979. Bill, known as "BK" to his friends, was passionate about a wide range of interests such as guitar, travel, fine wine, tennis, and most seriously, golf, becoming a scratch golfer in retirement. Bill is predeceased by his father Glenn, sisters Vivian and Mary, and brother John and is survived by his wife Margaret, daughter Kennedy, stepdaughter Sara and husband Jared and Bill's mother Joyce, four brothers (& sisters-in-law) Curtis & Sheila, Brian & Beth, Paul & Janie and Daniel & Kari, brother-in-law Carter Shrum, sister-in-law Susan Kelley, and many nieces and nephews. Memorial services will be announced at a later date.
