Wilma T. George (nee Thomas) San Diego - Wilma T. George (nee Thomas) died peacefully at her residential home on Wednesday, January 6, 2021, in San Diego, California, at the age of 91. She had multiple complications from a heart condition. Ms. George is survived by her sister Mary Horning of Kent, Ohio; son Michael E. George of Boston, Massachusetts; son Emil (Skip) George, Jr. of San Diego, California; granddaughter Meghan F. George of Lakewood, Ohio; grandsons Timothy J. George of Lakewood, Ohio, and Maxwell T. George of Boston, Massachusetts; daughters-in-law, Paula Griswold of Boston, Massachusetts, and Erika (Ricki) Becker of San Diego, California; as well as many loving nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her parents, sisters Lillian Irwin of Hudson, Ohio, and Goldie Ryder of Columbus, Ohio, and brothers Edward Thomas of Rootstown, Ohio, and Michael Thomas of Canfield, Ohio; ex-husband Emil George, Sr. of Lakewood, Ohio; and son Thomas J. George of Lakewood, Ohio. Ms. George was born on September 8, 1929, in Akron, Ohio to Michael and Frances Thomas. She graduated from Rootstown High School in 1946, Kent State University in 1961 and California State University in 1988 with degrees in education. She married Emil George, Sr. in 1951. After moving to Lakewood in 1962, Ms. George began teaching in the Lakewood Public Schools, first at Grant Elementary and then at Horace Mann Junior High School. She was an active member of the Lakewood League of Women Voters. Ms. George continued her teaching career after moving to La Quinta, California, in 1984. She taught at Peter Pendleton Elementary School in Indio, until her retirement in the 1990s. A memorial service will be scheduled at a later date, after cessation of the COVID-19 pandemic.
