Lila May (Richards – Phillips) Hiatt April 16, 1925 - Jan. 9, 2021 Lila May (Richards – Phillips) Hiatt passed away peacefully at home with her daughters by her side Jan. 9, 2021. She died of natural causes. Lila was born at her grandparent's farm house April 16, 1925 in Laurel, Ore. She was the first child born to Zora and Harry E. Richards. Her childhood was spent in S.W. Portland in John's landing. Her family moved to S.E. Portland when she was a teenager where she attended and graduated from Franklin high school. During her high school years she was primarily responsible for acquiring the beautiful statue of Benjamin Franklin that graces the school campus today. Lila was a gifted teacher of facts and earth sciences to all who were lucky enough to know her. She attended Pacific University in Forest Grove, Portland Community College and Portland State University in Oregon where she absorbed knowledge with great vigor. She was an avid reader and gardener her whole life. Lila Married David M. Hiatt in 1943. They had two sons. In 1947 she married Wilbert M. Phillips. Lila and Wilbert went on to have five more children. She was a great mother to all her seven children. Her home was a welcoming place for her many nieces and nephews whom she loved dearly. Lila retired from Jantzen where she worked for many years as a sample room seamstress. She loved Dory fishing at Pacific City, Ore., where she went almost every weekend for years. Enjoying the time with her family and friends and hosted the salmon bake every July. Lila is survived by her sister, Gail Culver (Dan) of Mesquite, Nev., her children, Michael "Mike" Phillips (Arlene), Patsy Wegner, Colleen Phillips, Timothy "Tim" Phillips (Linda), Bonita "Bonnie" Steele; step-children, James Malheur "Mal" Hiatt (Diane), Francis Hiatt (Sue), Linda Lardy, Sue Clack (Brad); and a large number of beloved grandchildren; great-grandchildren; and great-great-grandchildren; and many dear friends. She was preceded in death by her husbands, Wilbert Phillips and David Hiatt; son, David Phillips; stepson, Frank Hiatt; and daughter, Violet (Phillips - Candee) O'Neel She lived a long and grand life of loving and helping others. We miss her already and know that she is teaching the hosts of heaven how to identify nature and Dory fishing. Lila's celebration of life will be at The "Salmon" Bake this year, July 24, 2021.
