Pollack, Irwin 1/23/2021 Ann Arbor, Michigan Irwin Pollack, 95, born in Bridgeport, Conn Apr. 10, 1925 to Benjamin and Mary Beimel Pollack; died in Ann Arbor, Michigan Jan. 23, 2021. Irwin moved with his family to Miami Beach in his early teens after he contracted rheumatic fever. He graduated Phi Beta Kappa from the University of Florida in 1945 and earned his PhD in 1949 from Harvard specializing in psychophysics. His career started as a civilian scientist at the Air Force Operations Lab in Washington, DC and the Cambridge Research Lab in Bedford, Mass. In 1963 he came to the University of Michigan and retired in 1995 as Emeritus Professor of Psychology. Irwin was a Fellow of the Acoustical Society of America and of the American Psychological Association. His research took him to Japan, New Zealand, China, San Diego and Cambridge, Mass. Irwin and family spent an impactful 15 months in Holland and Cambridge University in the early 1960's. He was internationally known for his novel approaches to improve the understanding of the human auditory system. Irwin is survived by his wife of almost 72 years, Marcille Kaufman Pollack, his three children Sharron (m. Joe Weixlmann), Phyllis, and Stanley. He was a wonderfully generous and active grandfather to his grandchildren Dave Metz (m. Juliette Wallack), Sarah Metz Krissoff (m. Austin), Seth Weixlmann, Adira Weixlmann (fiance Tyler Browne), and Ben Weixlmann (m. Brittany) as well as great-grandson Paxton Metz. He was predeceased by his brother Norman Pollack. Irwin spent much of his post-retirement time being the devoted caregiver to Marcille. They are (life) members of Beth Israel Congregation since 1963.
