Janet V. Hunter
Hunter, Janet V. Janet Mary Varnado Hunter, 74, the sixth child of 11 children, was born on January 15, 1946 in Magnolia, MS to the late Robert and Marie DeDeaux Varnado. She entered into her eternal rest on January 13, 2021. Janet earned a degree in Elementary Education, graduating from Alcorn State University in 1969. She taught as an elementary school teacher for two years before moving North to Queens, NY where she married Dwight Hunter. Later they relocated to Hamden, CT and after taking a few years off to raise her young daughter; she was hired by the West Haven Board of Education as an elementary school teacher, in 1975. Janet became a Reading Specialist and worked as an ESL Teacher in the West Haven Night School for several years before and after she retired from the school system in 2011. Janet grew up in a family with a strong faith in Catholicism and was a devout Catholic who was involved in many activities within both her church, St. Martin de Porres and her community. She was also a member of the Business and Professional Women's Clubs Incorporated for more than thirty-five years. She was a Red Hatter; a member of Soul Passages Book Club since 2008 and was also an Arts Commissioner in Hamden from May 2013 to the present time. The life and legacy of Janet will remain in the hearts of her only child, Kimya (Robert) Rice, her grandchildren- Robert, Christian, Arianna, her three brothers – Robert, Jr., Spellman, and Ralph (Etta) Varnado, and a host of loved ones, church family, many colleagues, and friends. She was preceded in death by her brothers, William, Warren, George and Emmanuel; her sisters-Marie "Sister", Judy, and Stephanie Varnado; and her special friend, Tommy Battle. A walk-thru visitation will be held Friday, January 22, 2021 from 9:30 – 10:30 a.m. at St. Martin de Porres Church, 136 Dixwell Ave., New Haven, CT 06511. Celebration of life will be private. Interment will be at All Saints Cemetery, North Haven. Services by Howard K. Hill Funeral Services, 1287 Chapel St., New Haven, CT 06511.
