Doornbos, Frederick Doornbos, Frederick A. age 88, went to be with his Lord on Monday, January 11, 2021. He is survived by his children, Mark and Linda Doornbos, Matthew and Nancy Doornbos, Lynn Doornbos, and Leslie and Denny Wandzel; 8 grandchildren; 4 great grandchildren; and brother, George (Janice) Doornbos. Fred was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 59 years, Carol J. Doornbos; his parents, Arie and Gertrude Doornbos; sister, Lois Roodvoets (Doornbos); and brother, Donald. After graduating from Grand Rapids Central Christian, Fred attended Calvin College (now Calvin University) before attending and graduating from Wayne State University – School of Medicine in 1958. Fred served his community as a General Surgeon for 37 years through private practice at many of the area hospitals, primarily at Grand Rapids Butterworth Hospital (now Spectrum Health). Where he was a member of the Medical staff from 1963 until his retirement in 1997. At Butterworth, Fred was a member of the Critical Care Committee, Chairmen of the Disaster Committee, and served in the Department of Surgery, first as Vice Chair then as Chairman. Early in his career, his passion for emergency medical care led him, along with several area physicians, into involvement with the Grand Rapids Police Department. Assisting, developing, and training select GRPD and other area officers in trauma care as first responders to accidents and disasters. In Grand Rapids this became the E-Unit of the GRPD. Fred was nominated to Honorary Status upon his retirement in 1997. In 2005 he was honored by being nominated into the Distinguished Physician Society which recognizes those who went beyond the call of duty, made a significant contribution, and worked courageously and unselfishly to advance the greater mission. Fred, along with his wife Carol, were founding members of Shawnee Park Christian Reformed church and remained lifelong members. He and Carol went on numerous mission trips in association with the CRC, traveling to Haiti and Mexico. Fred also traveled to the Philippines and several times to Guatemala as part of a medical missionary team bringing needed surgical resources to remote Guatemalan regions. Fred loved to spend time with family at their cottage at White Lake. He enjoyed the peace of the lake, boating, and especially fishing on Lake Michigan for King Salmon, Coho, Steelhead and Lake Trout. Fred was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, uncle, brother, son, and friend. A private funeral service will be on Friday, January 15, at 2PM, however, the service will be available via livestream at www.vimeo.com/zaagman . Interment will be at Pine Hill Cemetery.
