In memory of
Geraldine Marie "Geri" Hughes
Geraldine "Geri" Marie Hughes Beloved family woman, tenacious, and big hearted, 83 Geraldine "Geri" Marie (née Carola) Hughes, passed away peacefully at age 83 on January 11th. An intimate gathering of immediate family will celebrate her life and, later this year, hold a mass for extended family and friends. Geri was born on October 16th, 1937, in Newark, NJ as the third of four children to Luigi and Isabella (née Laterza) Carola. Always a proud Italian-American, she just couldn't resist Gerald Hughes, an Irishman with Steve McQueen good looks and a heart of gold, who would go on to become her husband and the love of her life, leading to a lifetime of Geri and Jerry jokes. They would make a home in Hazlet, NJ, and have three daughters, Debi, "The Boss," Lisa, "The Nurse," and Tish, "The Baby," who would all mirror Geri's beauty, tenacity, sharp tongue, and big heart - qualities that sometimes gave her grief, but always filled her with pride. Geri was an accomplished athlete, as long as the only sport in question was bowling, and passionate connoisseur of coffee, as long as it was always one degree shy of scorching hot and served with sugar and whole milk. An extrovert who not-so-secretly loved attention, it might be considered odd that she was actually a bit of a homebody; that's because she preferred everyone coming to her turf. Her legendary poker nights with family and friends always went into the wee hours of the morning, where junk food and cigarettes were served on repeat and contestants played for nickels and dimes stored in old coffee cans. More than anything, though, Geri loved being "Mimi" to Johnny, Ricky, Tara, Erica, and Joey - a name she coined for herself because she correctly stated she looked too young to be called Grandma (her favorite pastime when her daughters were grown was feigning embarrassment and shock when she was misidentified as the fourth sister of her three daughters). She loved to spoil her grandchildren, taking great pleasure in educating them on classic Hollywood movies and teaching them how to play every card game and version of poker that existed - but never letting them win. Geri could never turn down an invitation for warm weather and laying by a pool, making West Palm Beach the perfect retirement spot for her and Jerry for over twenty years (we'll leave out the year prior where she begrudgingly agreed to let Jerry take her on a tour of the east coast in a motorhome). Settling in May's Landing with Jerry prior to his passing in 2019, she spent her final years watching Hallmark movies on repeat, reading People Magazine cover to cover, and continuing her life's work of refusing to get out of bed prior to noon. Preceded in death by her parents, husband, and brother, Joey, Geri is survived by her aforementioned daughters, five grandchildren, and Ricardo, her great-grandson whom she met and held in person last year, visiting with him through various FaceTime playdates ever since. Geri also leaves behind siblings Cecilia and Louie; sons-in-law, John and Richard; Ricky's wife, Rachel; Tara's fiancé, Milo, and numerous nieces, nephews, sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, and many dear friends. In a serendipitous coincidence, Geri will be laid to rest on January 14th, the 65th anniversary of her wedding day to Jerry at 11 a.m. at Holy Cross Cemetery, 5061 Harding Hwy, Mays Landing, NJ. In lieu of flowers, Geri's family asks that donations be made in her name to St. Katharine Drexel Church in Egg Harbor Township, NJ.
