In memory of
Elizabeth Foster Hughes
July 19, 1932 - December 27, 2020 Elizabeth Foster "Betty" Hughes, 88, wife of the late G. Bailey Hughes, Sr., passed away on Sunday, December 27, 2020. Betty spent much of her life supporting her husband's career at Eastman Kodak, and raising her two children. This was made more challenging by the need to organize cross-country and international relocations every few years (and the resulting emotional outbursts from her children), a challenge Betty met with unfailing good humor and grace. She was an excellent cook and hostess, famous for the dazzling variety of Christmas cookies she baked every year. In addition to her family responsibilities, Betty served for several years as a remedial reading teacher in public schools, and later as a co-founder and co-proprietor of Calico Corner, a quilting shop in La Habra, California. Betty was an accomplished and prolific quilter, turning out dozens of gorgeous and intricately-sewn quilts, usually as treasured gifts for loved ones. Later in life, Betty was a very active volunteer for St. Andrews Episcopal Church in Fullerton, as well as for Pathways to Hope, in both cases focusing on service to less-fortunate families in the Fullerton area. More important than what Betty did, though, was who she was. Whether as a wife, mother, grandmother, teacher, quilting mentor, or volunteer, Betty put others ahead of herself, living an exemplary life of service. She was greatly loved and will be greatly missed. Betty is survived by her daughter: Kathy Cartelli (Lyle); her son: Chip Hughes (Claudia); and her grandchildren Lance Cartelli, Joe Hughes, and Liz Barry (Matt). Services will be deferred until the COVID-19 pandemic has abated. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Andrews Episcopal Church, 1231 East Chapman Avenue, Fullerton, CA 92831 ( saintandrewsfullerton.com ); or to Pathways to Hope, P.O.Box 6326, Fullerton, CA 92834 ( pohoc.org ).
