In memory of
Timothy James Rhein
Timothy James Rhein February 13, 1941 - December 26, 2020 Carmel On December 26th, 2020, a beautiful soul left this earth. Timothy James Rhein, loving husband, father, grandfather and friend passed away at the age of 79 in his beloved Carmel, CA. He passed peacefully at home in the presence of his family. Tim is survived by his wife Kathy, his children Gretchen, Erika, Sheila and David, and his precious grandchildren Luke, Reid, Tyler, Kaitlyn, Leonardo, Brooklyn, Hunter and Alexandria. A native San Franciscan, Tim was born into an Irish-Italian family on February 13, 1941. He attended Saint Ignatius High School in San Francisco, Santa Clara University and pursued his graduate education at William and Mary College in Virginia. Upon graduation, Tim began his life's journey as a Second Lieutenant in the U.S. Army. He served in Germany and then Viet Nam, where he received the Bronze Star Medal. He also served at Fort Hood, and Fort Ord, where he met his wife Kathy, a school teacher in Carmel. They had a loving marriage for 55 years. When his military years ended, he embarked on a career with American President Lines (APL), one of the world's largest container ocean carriers, where he advanced to President and CEO. His career afforded him the opportunity to travel extensively throughout the world. Under Tim's leadership, APL became a member of the "Fortune 500". APL was the oldest continuously operating shipping company in America, and to quote the Congressional Record of 2001, "Timothy Rhein was a nimble and gutsy decision maker, and we in Washington will miss his understanding and knowledge as we continue our pursuit of a policy to promote a strong U.S. flag shipping presence". While raising their family, Tim and Kathy settled in Marin County, CA, where they lived for 35 years. They built their vacation home at Lake Tahoe, where they spent every summer with their children and grandchildren since 1981. Upon Tim's retirement in 2001, Tim and Kathy returned to the Monterey Peninsula, and built a home in Pebble Beach, but eventually returned to the nearby town where they met, Carmel. Tim will be remembered as a loving, positive, strong, and courageous man, and his laughter will echo throughout our hearts forever. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
