In memory of
John Lefebvre
John P. “Jean-Paul” Lefebvre, 88, who has resided with his daughter Christine later in his life at Winnapaug Road., Westerly, RI, passed away at Yale New Haven Hospital on Wednesday, December 16, 2020. John passed after a valiant battle with heart disease. Born in Sherbrooke, Canada, he was the son of the late Antonio and Cecile Lefebvre. He was the loving husband of Irene (Downey) Lefebvre who predeceased him on 7/31/12. John and Irene were lifelong residents of the city of Chicopee, Mass. where they raised their family until her passing. He will be dearly missed by his four children, Paul Lefebvre of S. Hadley, MA, Christine Hayes of Westerly, RI, and Gary Lefebvre and Cherie Oliver, both of Chicopee, MA. John also leaves two siblings, Guy Lefebvre of S. Hadley, MA and Hugette Mclaughlin of Virginia. In addition, he also sadly leaves eight grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild; as well as several nieces and nephews. He was also predeceased by his first granddaughter Melissa O’Connell as well as three siblings, Paulette Dame, Roland and Andre Lefebvre; and his best friend Robert “Uncle Bob” Dame. John emigrated to the U.S. from Canada as a child with his family and became a naturalized American citizen service honorably active-duty in the Korean War from 1952-1954. He was also a lifetime member of the American Legion. His immeasurable love and devotion to his family, especially his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren was beyond comprehension. There wasn’t anything he would not do for each and everyone of them in all of his 88 years. Always with a loving touch and smile. If you knew John, you knew what a kind, fun-loving man he was. He would make friends (some lifelong) wherever he went. People were naturally drawn to his easy-going personality. In acknowledging his fun-loving nature and selfless personality, it is in no way meant to diminish his lifelong work ethic. Working most of his life, three jobs to provide for his family. To be sure, John has never shirked away from any job or project he set out to complete. A true Canadian Craftsman, there wasn’t a carpentry, painting, wallpapering or a drywall job that he could not do with perfection! Not to mention his expertise at car repair for any friend or family if asked. He was always there with his impetuous smile, his tools of the trade always with him for any family member or friend who might need a room painted, a triple decker wire-brushed and painted or a house renovated. Make no mistake about it though, John surely enjoyed his favorite pastimes. He loved playing hockey his entire life as well as coaching the sport. He was athletic and enjoyed swimming, tennis, skiing and played on softball and bowling leagues through the years. But one of his most favorite pastimes that he really enjoyed was watching NASCAR racing. He attended many races near and far with his sons and granddaughter Mellissa. In addition to all of his accomplishments in his life, John fulfilled his lifelong dream of becoming a firefighter. He proudly served as a civil servant firefighter for the city of Chicopee, MA. John was a truly beloved son, husband, brother, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle and faithful friend to many. He will be heartbreakingly missed. John was a devout Catholic and a true patriot and although he lost his final battle, he fought it with immense courage and dignity. He is now blessed with eternal life and peaceful happiness with the angels above, his “Honey” and his family whom he loved so dearly. Due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, a future Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated, followed by burial at Massachusetts Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Agawam, Mass. with Full Military Honors. It will be announced by the family at a later date. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in John’s memory. Gaffney-Dolan Funeral Home, 59 Spruce St., Westerly is in care of the arrangements. For online condolences please visit www.gaffneydolanfuneralhome.com
