In memory of
Sharon Smeedy Sawant
Sharon Smeedy Sawant Knoxville - Sharon Smeedy Sawant, 67, beloved wife of Ratan S. Sawant passed away on January 8, 2021, surrounded by family. Sharon was born on April 4, 1953 in Stoneham, Massachusetts and grew up in tiny West Dennis on Cape Cod. Sharon and Ratan met in 1972 on the Island of Nantucket during a cultural outing arranged by the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, where Sharon was studying Education and Ratan was studying Structural Engineering. They were together for 48 years, married for 45, and have lived in Knoxville for 39 years. Together they raised three children - Yohan, Shanti, and Nina. Sharon loved animals, especially her dog Kizzy. Sharon lived her life in service to others, starting with her family. She also taught hundreds of second and third graders over a 25-year career, mentored and supported her fellow teachers at Dogwood Elementary School, and in her brief retirement, volunteered at the Center for English to care for young children while their parents attended classes. We are so proud of the life she lived. She was always up for an adventure, from backpacking across Europe in her youth, to her annual pilgrimage to Nickerson State Park, to parasailing over the Caribbean, to ziplining over the Smokies in her 60s. Sharon and Ratan also enjoyed traveling the world together, including trips to Jamaica, Peru, Egypt, Morocco, Kenya, Tanzania, Dubai, India, Germany, Italy, England, France, Spain, and Portugal. She was the best mom, the best partner, the center of our family, a wonderful sister, a fun aunt, a loyal friend, a caring teacher, and just a good, honest, kind person. Her vibrant smile, contagious giggle, big heart, and propensity for lighthearted mischief will be deeply missed. She fought cancer courageously for eighteen months, and now she finally gets to rest. She is preceded in death by her parents and older brother. She is survived by her husband, three children, dog, two grand dogs, three younger sisters, younger brother, sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, nieces, nephews, grandnieces, and grandnephews spread across Massachusetts, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Tennessee, Georgia, California, Seattle, Dubai, Australia, England, and India. A celebration of Sharon's life will be held when the family feels it is safe to be conducted. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital or Young-Williams Animal Center. Online condolences may be shared at clickfh.com .
