In memory of
Martha Jo Henslee Bellah
BELLAH, Martha Jo Henslee Martha Jo Henslee Bellah, beloved wife, mother, sister, niece, grandmother, great grandmother and friend, passed away peacefully at Brazos Towers at Bayou Manor Healthcare Center in Houston, Texas, on January 4, 2021, at the age of 92. Martha Jo was born in Anson, Texas, to Lena Ethel Harris and William Stewart Henslee on January 7, 1928. She graduated as Valedictorian, Best All-Around Girl, and Cheerleader of Anson High School. She continued the "cheerleader" role in spirit for the rest of her life as she raised her children and encouraged others. Martha Jo had a beautiful smile that lit up any room and exuded a positive "you can do anything you set your mind to" attitude. She met the love of her life, Gordon Bellah of Saint Jo, Texas, at North Texas State University, where she earned her Bachelor of Business Administration degree. Martha Jo and Gordon married on June 1, 1948 and moved to Frisco, Texas. In 1958, they moved to Richardson, Texas, where they raised their four children and remained in their retirement. In honor of their 60th Wedding Anniversary, a bench was dedicated in Heights Park, where the family spent many happy times. Martha Jo and Gordon were married for 65 years. Martha Jo worked for First Presbyterian Church of Richardson, Richardson Independent School District, and the Aerobics Center Guest Lodge associated with Cooper Clinic. She dearly loved her children and enthusiastically supported their many activities. Martha Jo was an excellent cook and seamstress, and patiently taught her children these skills. She loved games and working puzzles. She was an avid bridge player, crossword puzzle expert, and family "spell checker" before computers came along. Even in her nineties, Martha Jo could win at Spinner Dominos with her adult children. Together with her husband, she enjoyed bridge club, traveling, music, and square and round dancing. Martha Jo's greatest loves were the Lord and her family. She was preceded in death by her husband, mother, father, brother, William "Billy" Harris Henslee, and Aunt Hester A. Harris. Martha Jo is survived by her four children: Martha Anne Bellah, Dr. Gordon Bellah, Jr. and his wife Kathleen, Susan Elizabeth Starling and her husband Winton, and Betty Lou Olson and her husband Grieg. She is also survived by her eight grandchildren: Sam Tower, John Tower and his wife Candace, James Bellah, David Bellah, Rachel Dickerson and her husband Nicholas, Daniel Gonzales, Alan Olson, Jamie Waters and her husband Peter. Six great grandchildren, Rebekah Tower, Jordan Tower, Eden Tower, Mason Dickerson, Carter Dickerson, and Eloise Dickerson are a part of this beautiful legacy. A private burial service will be held at Restland. A memorial service celebrating the life of Martha Jo Bellah will be held at a later date when it is safe to do so. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to First Presbyterian Church, P.O. Box 831985, Richardson, Texas, 75083.
