Elvin C. 'Al' Downer Jr. Fanwood resident since 1955, WWII Army veteran Elvin C. "Al" Downer Jr., 96, of Fanwood, N.J., died on November 19, 2020, at JFK Hospital in Edison. A graveside service will take place on Tuesday, November 24, 2020, at 10:30 a.m. at Hollywood Memorial Park in Union. Al was born in Orange, N.J., on September 5, 1924, and lived in Newark, N.J., and since 1955, Fanwood, N.J. During World War II he served in the U.S. Army in the South Pacific. Upon returning home he resumed his employment with the Mutual Benefit Life Insurance Company where he worked in several positions. At the time of his retirement in 1985 he was assistant secretary and manager of the Claim Department. Al's wife, Elvira, and son, Robert, predeceased him. He is survived by his daughter-in-law, Kim Ruane, and a nephew of his deceased wife, Todd Peters and his wife, Patricia. Arrangements are by Memorial Funeral Home in Fanwood. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the ALS Association, 1275 K Street, NW Suite 1050, Washington DC 20005.
