In memory of
Silvia T. Correa
Silvia J. Correa Educator It is with deep sadness that we share the passing of Silvia J. Correa, beloved mother of Silvia T. Abbato, Union City Superintendent of Schools and Adriana Birne, Union City Director of Early Childhood Education. Mrs. Correa, a lifelong Union City resident, was a dedicated educator for over 35 years in the Newark Public School System, inspiring countless students to believe in themselves and follow their dreams. In her role as an elementary school teacher, she was twice awarded Teacher of the Year for her exceptional work. She was predeceased by her husband, Rolando Correa, a fellow educator, who served the Union City Community as both a Guidance Counselor and a role model at Emerson High School and Roosevelt Elementary School. The Correas were committed to education and to giving back to the community, inspiring the same values in those around them. "Mima" leaves behind a legacy of educators, leaders and visionaries in her beautiful, grieving family. She was adored by her sons-in-law, Christopher Abbato, retired Bilingual/At Risk Leader at Union City High School and Edward Birne. She was cherished by her grandchildren, Steven Birne, Michael Abbato, Assistant Principal of Emerson Middle School, and his wife, Alex, Literacy Coach at George Washington Elementary School, Cynthia Birne, Teacher at Colin Powell Elementary School and Richard Abbato. She was also the proud great-grandmother of Noelle Abbato. Silvia Correa passed away from a non-Covid related illness. A private service will be observed by her family. Please keep the Birne and Abbato families in your thoughts and prayers during this very difficult time.
