Commander Robert L. Engemann Sr.
Ret USN - 1920-2020 Fullerton Robert L. Engemann, Sr., age 99, passed away on July 3rd at Park Vista Health Center. The eldest of two sons, Bob was born on October 18, 1920 in San Francisco, CA to Herman and Myrtle Engemann. Bob grew up in the city, where he met his high school sweetheart and wife of 65 years, Joann Yvette (Heath) Engemann, predeceased. With an initial desire to become a commercial pilot, Bob graduated from the Naval Flight School in Jacksonville, FL in 1941. Bob began training in 1942 with the Navy's Patrol Bombing Squadron VPB-54 ("Black Cats"), flying the amphibious PBY-5A Catalinas. Following the attack on Pearl Harbor, his squadron was sent to the Pacific Ocean theater. From 1942-1944, Bob flew numerous night raids as part of antishipping patrols in the Solomon Islands, as well as anti-submarine raids and search & rescue missions. He was proud to have overseen inspection trips under the command of Fleet Admiral William "Bull" Halsey. He was decorated with the Distinguished Flying Cross and three Air Medals for exploits under enemy fire. Following the war, Bob continued his Naval service, rising to the rank of Commander in 1956 while that same year receiving a B.S. in Military Science from the University of Maryland. He went on to receive his Masters in Personnel Management from George Washington University in 1963 while working as a Program Manager for the Bureau of Naval Weapons. Bob retired from the Navy in 1963 and settled his family in Fullerton, CA to begin working at Autonetics (a Boeing organization). Bob transitioned to the real estate business in 1965, launching a successful new career that lasted over forty years and spawned a Fullerton family-owned real estate agency run by his children and grandchildren. Bob will be remembered for his devotion to his family, his love of music & dancing and his winning smile. Bob was preceded in death by his loving wife, his brother, Lee and grandson, Robert "Brett" Engemann. He is survived by his son, Bob Engemann, Jr. of Laguna Beach; daughter, Joan E. Montana of Huntington Beach; granddaughters, Kalana Ricklef & Kara Sarracino of Fullerton, as well as 4 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great grandchildren. Bob and Joann's ashes will be buried in 2021 at Arlington National Cemetery, VA McAulay & Wallace Mortuary
