GALESBURG - Paul F. Simpson, 83, Galesburg, died suddenly at 6:21 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 15, 2020, in the OSF St. Mary Medical Center Emergency Department. Paul was born Dec. 21, 1936, in Knoxville, Tennessee, the son of John P. and Lennie (Scarbrough) Simpson. He married Irene Howell; he then married Phyllis Paraman. He later married Phyllis (Curtis) Erwin on Dec. 12, 1970, in East Galesburg. Paul is survived by his wife of almost 50 years, Phyllis; his sons, Stephen (Pamela) Simpson of Calhoun, Tennessee, Richard (Tracy) Erwin of Glasford and Daniel (Angela) Simpson of Keithsburg; his daughters, Catherine (Paul) Mayer of Calhoun and Melody Mitchell of Springfield, Missouri; his brothers, Billy Simpson of Tennessee and Tom Simpson of Galesburg; his sister, Carol McCall of Abingdon; nine grandchildren; three great-grandsons; and one great-granddaughter. He was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, George, Luther, Elden and Milton Simpson; and two sisters, Johnie Harrison and Evelyn Nelson. Paul worked in the meat processing department for the Oscar Mayer Plant for 34 years, retiring in 1996. He then worked for the Knox County Sheriff's Department as the maintenance director for 10 years, retiring in 2010. He attended the Church of God of Prophecy in Abingdon and also the OASIS Church in East Galesburg. Paul liked to sit on his front porch and read his Bible, and he enjoyed fishing. Graveside services are scheduled for 10 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 20, 2020, at the Abingdon Cemetery, with Rev. Sherman Jones officiating. Visitation will be 4 to 6 p.m. Monday, Oct. 19, 2020, at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Funeral Directors and Cremation Services Galesburg Chapel. Due to guidelines associated with the COVID-19 pandemic, social distancing and face masks will be required with limited seating. Memorials may be made to the family.
