Richard Alan Alvarez Thermal - It is with great sadness to announce that Richard "Rick" Alvarez was called to be with the Lord on October 10, 2020. Rick was born on April 6, 1958, in Indio, CA to Vicente and Juanita Alvarez. He was raised in an Apostolic pastoral home where he learned to love the Lord, the Church, and the Coachella Valley. He graduated from C.V.H.S in 1976, and went on to pursue a higher education at Cal Poly Pomona, where he received a Bachelors of Arts in Social Sciences. While in college, he surrendered his life to the Lord and was baptized in the name of Jesus Christ in April of 1979. Soon after, he accepted the call to ministry and was ordained as a minister of the Lord in 1982, under the Apostolic Assembly of the Faith in Christ Jesus, Inc. From a young age, he desired to become an educator and impact the lives of students. In 1981, he started teaching History at the Coachella Valley High School (CVHS). While teaching, he became the yearbook advisor and coached both soccer and track. On December 17, 1983, he married the love of his life, Diana M. Alvarez (Cantu) and together, they built a home of faith, service, and giving. They had four children within five years: Joshua, Jonathan, Jasmine, and Janae. With his dream of pursuing his education at heart, he received a Master of Administration from Cal State San Bernardino. He was then offered his first principal position at Oasis Elementary School, where he led for six years until being hired as the principal of his Alma Mater, C.V.H.S. Living out his childhood dream, he proudly wore green and gold and roamed the halls of C.V. He led there for seven years when he was offered his first position at the C.V.U.S.D Administrative Offices as Personnel Director and Assistant Superintendent for Administrative Services. His last position, where he served for about seven years, was as the Assistant Superintendent for Educational Services. Rick professionally served for 30 years, until his retirement in 2011. His work ethics, example, and leadership assisted and empowered many individuals throughout the community to pursue higher education, careers as educators, seek God, and live up to their fullest potential. While serving in the educational system, he also devoted his gifts and talents to the advancement of God's kingdom. He served along side his father, Vicente, in Cathedral City for many years and later served as the Assistant Pastor of Mecca Apostolic Church for 13 years. In March of 2013, he accepted the call to pastor the Oasis Apostolic Church in Thermal, CA. Leadership and mentorship ran through his veins. His love for God and his community was evident in all the work that he did as a Pastor, Educator, and Administrator. He served the Lord with all of his heart and dedicated his life and career to the kingdom of God. His example encouraged his family to do the same. Family meant everything to him and he would find any reason to gather everyone together. He was most proud of his children, their accomplishments, and most of all, their love for God. He looked forward to spending time with his nine grandchildren. They brought him great joy and filled his life with laughter. He loved making up crazy stories and telling them to his grandchildren just to make them laugh. He was loved and admired by many and we know that his legacy will live on in those whose lives he impacted in the community he served. Rick is survived by his father Vicente Alvarez, and six siblings (Vincent, Lisa, Steven, Lucita, June, and Esperanza); his wife, Diana M. Alvarez, and his four children (Joshua, Jonathan, Jasmine, and Janae), two daughter in-laws (Diana and Belia), two son in-laws (Jonathan and Uriel), and nine grandchildren (Eliana, James, Ezra, Noah, Brooke, Naomi, Arabella, Luke, and Nathaniel). Join us in thanking the Lord for the life and influence of Richard Alan Alvarez. We are grateful for his life, leadership, and ministry. He is now resting in victory with the Lord. -The Alvarez Family Unfortunately, due to Covid-19 restrictions, the in-person funeral services will be by invitation only. Services will be broadcasted via YouTube and Facebook (search for Oasis Apostolic Church). Thank you for understanding.
