Sharilyn Cohn Aug. 16, 1954 - Sept. 17, 2020 Sharilyn Cohn, a lifelong musician and entrepreneur who co-founded the Portland, Oregon, music-thanatology practice SacredFlight, died Sept. 17, 2020, after living for six years with multiple myeloma. She was 66 years old. Born in Jacksonville, Fla., to Melitta and Harold Cohn, Sharilyn was an honors graduate in music from the University of Memphis and enjoyed a professional career as a cellist in Memphis and Atlanta before attending the Chalice of Repose Project School of Music-Thanatology in Missoula, Mont. In 2001, Sharilyn was among the creators of SacredFlight, a non-profit practice providing palliative care by means of harp vigils for patients nearing the end of life. In 2007, Sharilyn co-founded a program to train music-thanatologists in the Northwest in partnership with Lane Community College in Eugene, Ore. She served on the Leadership Council as vice president and conference committee chair for the Music-Thanatology Association International, and for 19 years directed and participated in annual music-thanatology concerts in Oregon and Washington. Sharilyn and fellow music-thanatologist Barbara Cabot were married in 2013. In addition to her professional activities, Sharilyn was a passionate bird watcher, amassing almost 500 birds on her life list. She enjoyed televised sports and was an avid fan of the Florida Gators. Sharilyn was preceded in death by her father and her brother, Harold Cohn of St. Marys, Ga. She is survived by her wife, Barbara Cabot; her mother and sister, Jennifer King, of Jacksonville, Fla.; nephews, Devon Box (Elizabeth) and Harold and Cory Cohn; sister-in-law, Becky Cohn; and the many friends and colleagues who miss her generous spirit and keen wit.
