Richard J. "Dick" O'Donnell CANANDAIGUA - Richard J. "Dick" O'Donnell, age 95, passed away at home on Monday, Oct. 5, 2020, while surrounded by his loving family. He is survived by his beloved wife of 66 years, Ruth O'Donnell; five children, Maureen O'Donnell, Richard (Martha) O'Donnell Jr., Michael (Marcia) O'Donnell, Eileen Pope and Thomas (Tamra) O'Donnell; 10 grandchildren, Brittany (Michael) Boch, Krista Archambeau, Benjamin Pope, Morgan, Mitchell, Austin, Shannon, Jadon, Ethan and Jillian O'Donnell; and great-granddaughter, Emma Grace Boch. Dick was born in Morristown, N.J., and was the son of Richard and Helen (Ginder) O'Donnell. He was a graduate of Don Bosco High School and Mount St. Mary's College. Dick married Ruth, the love of his life, in 1954. They moved to Canandaigua in 1958 to pursue his career with Pepperidge Farms. For 57 years, he owned and operated a successful cookie and cracker franchise with them. After retirement from Pepperidge Farms, Dick began his second career at 74 years of age with Canandaigua National Bank, where he worked for 17 years as a courier. Dick loved Canandaigua and was an active volunteer in the community. He was a 60-year member of the Erina Hose Volunteer Fire Co., member and former exalted ruler of the Canandaigua Elks Club and a member of St. Mary's Church. Dick also taught physical education at St. Mary's School for numerous years. His greatest satisfaction was coaching and mentoring kids in the basketball program there for 17 years and as a supporter for many years after that. Dick amassed a record of 300 wins and only 72 loses while coaching at St. Mary's. He was a man of many passions, such as Notre Dame football and basketball, New York Yankees and Boston Celtics. Dick's most prized passion though was his family. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, there will be a private funeral Mass for Dick. A celebration of life will be held at a later date and time to be announced. Interment will be in Woodlawn Cemetery, Canandaigua. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Mary's School, 16 Gibson St., Canandaigua, NY 14424. Arrangements are by Johnson-Kennedy Funeral Home Inc., Canandaigua.
