Burden, Sally M 11/30/1936 - 10/5/2020 Jackson and Ann Arbor Sally M (Rubert) Burden, 83, of Jackson and Ann Arbor passed away on Monday October 5, 2020 of natural causes at Legacy Assisted Living. Born in Jackson, MI, Sally was a 1954 Graduate of Jackson High School, and she earned bachelor's and master's degrees in education at the University of Michigan. Go Blue! Early in her career she taught elementary school, and then specialized in dyslexia & reading disabilities. She was one of the pioneers of teaching Project Read, and trained many educators throughout the country. She was a long time member of the International Dyslexia Association, and in 2010 received an award for her Outstanding Leadership. She also provided private tutoring to children & adults. She loved to read, was passionate about the arts & architecture, traveled the world, but most of all loved spending time at Little Lake by Lake Superior. She was preceded in Death by her parents Max and Helen (Walters) Rubert, her son Andrew Burden, her brother Max "Skip" Rubert II, her son-in-law James Wetzel, and her ex-husband, Dennis Burden. She is survived by her daughter, Elizabeth "Betsy" Burden of Boston, MA; her grandchildren Caleb Burden of Chelsea, MI and Serena (Zac) Quatre of Prineville, OR and great grandchildren Eko and Lyra Quatre; three sisters Sue (Dick) Dodge, Sherry (Danny) Dodge, Mary Helen (Rick) Larson, and sister-in-law Nancy Iseler Rubert; and many adored nieces & nephews. In her desire to share her passion for the arts, she took all of her nieces and nephews to a performance of the Nutcracker at the Power Center in Ann Arbor. Private graveside service will be held at Woodland cemetery, Jackson on 10/9/20. In lieu of flowers, one may want to get a good book to read & give thanks to a teacher, or donate to the charity of your choice.
